Recreation in Galveston.
Galveston is
known for its great restaurants, historical charm and first-rate
attractions, but it's also a popular place to take it easy. Possibly
it's the island mentality, but most islanders are more casual and
relaxed than people from some other places. And it doesn't take long to
adopt this easy-going attitude.
Galveston provides the perfect recipe for water sports. Take generous
amounts of water, add semitropical temperatures and gently stir with a
sea breeze. The result? Sailors feel the salt spray from both the Gulf
of Mexico or Galveston Bay in a matter virtually every day of the year.
Surfers and wind surfers test their skills in the sparkling Gulf waters.
And the Galveston Bay area hosts more sports fishing than any other spot
on the Texas Coast.
Galveston - It's a great place to exercise or just sit to watch a flock
of brown pelicans skim across the waves at sunset.
Fishing
Galveston Island is every angler's dream offering beachfront, pier,
surf, inshore, offshore and bluewater fishing. Anglers can enjoy fishing
for Flounder, Trout, Redfish, Tuna, Marlin, Snapper, Shark and other
catches of the day. But there are a few requirements: For fishing inside
Texas waters, you must have a TEXAS fishing license for all fisherman
17-65, plus a 3-day salt water sport fishing license (if applicable).
You can purchase a license from the Galveston County Courthouse, 733
Moody Street in Galveston. You can also purchase licenses at many area
sporting goods stores, convenience stores, tackle shops, and bait camps.
Birding
Galveston is one of the top locations for birding in the United States.
The Island is a central location for novice and expert birders offering
a wide variety of species. Water and shore birds are common on the
Island throughout the year while rare species are spotted during Fall
and Spring Migration. Water and shore birds from other coasts also
travel to the Island during migration.
The Galveston Country Club
The oldest private country club in Texas, it is also an important part
of historic Galveston Island where gracious traditions are still
honored.
Founded in 1898, the Galveston Country Club represents a life of elegant
ease in this beautiful seaside resort on the Island's West end. Known
for a unique and challenging golf course that has hosted golfing greats
such as Bobby Jones, the course is immaculately groomed year round and
amenities include a driving range, putting green and a fully stocked pro
shop. Members and guests enjoy a full schedule of tournaments throughout
the year and a resident PGA golf professional is always on hand for
individual or group lessons.
The scenic eighteen hole championship course, located near Galveston
Bay, features numerous water holes, over fifty Sand Bunkers, hundreds of
palms and oleanders, and an abundance of beautiful water fowl. Not
exceptionally long, the course requires precision shot making and a good
course management. Compactly arranged, the course allows for rounds of
under three and one half hours.
The 18 Hole Championship Golf Course is home of: the Rudy T. Golf
Classic, National Super Seniors, The Beachcombers Tournament, Gulf Coast
Intercollegiate Tournament, Host of the 1998 Texas Boy Junior
Championship, Host of the 1995 Texas Girls Junior Championship.
